ATTENTION! Do not attempt payments for fire service hydraulic tests, meter abandonments, meter relocations, or meter purchases until Meter Applications provides you with an invoice and payment instructions. Payments attempted prior to receipt of an Invoice and Payment Instructions will likely be returned by the Payment Center and cause a delay in processing your request. Payments must be made within 14 days of the application process and made payable to the City of Atlanta. The City of Atlanta accepts cash, personal or business checks, money orders, debit cards and all major credit cards.
The term “meter abandonment” applies to the complete removal of a water meter from a property and an abandonment/removal of the tap at the water main. Any future water usage at said property would require installation of a new meter (meter purchase fees apply).
The cost of a meter abandonment varies (based on the size and location of the meter). Once the request is reviewed by the Office of Engineering Services (OES), customers will be referred to Meter Applications for an application and Invoice and Payment Instructions accordingly. Payment must be made within 14 days of the application process. Once the payment is made for the Meter Abandonment, the customer must allow fifteen (15) weeks for completion.
Commercial –
The Office of Engineering Services Water Availability Group must be contacted via email at WPR.INSIDECOA@atlantaga.gov or WPR.OUTSIDECOA@atlantaga.gov (depending on the location of the property), or by phone at 404-546-3240, for requests and associated costs.
Residential –
Removal of the meter (meter abandonment) is NOT required for a residential demolition. A request should be submitted to disconnect the water service. After the water is turned off, a plumber or contactor can disconnect the water line from the meter. If the water line needs to be capped by the Department of Watershed Management (DWM), please call Customer Service at 404-546-0311.
*NOTE: If an actual meter abandonment is needed, please follow the Commercial instructions shown above.
